As group chairman and director of MBI Group, I have had the privilege of seeing first-hand the remarkable transformation of several family businesses into a successful and diverse multinational company.
Today, the businesses owned by the Yousuf family under the umbrella of the MBI Group encompass a range of industries, from mining to agriculture, soft drinks to fast-moving consumer goods.
We operate across three continents, headquartered in Lusaka, Zambia and have established brands such as Tangy Drinks that are competing with the largest corporations in the world for market share.
The MBI Group story began over twenty years ago, and we have worked relentlessly to grow a diverse portfolio of leading businesses ever since. Each family member has particular responsibility for different areas, under the family’s overall direction and control. The establishment of the MBI Group brought together our various business interests.
Throughout, we have placed the utmost importance on upholding our family values, integrity and moral convictions. We do not invest in alcohol. We do not invest in drugs. We do not invest in gambling. And we do not invest in armaments.
Humble beginnings, and an appreciation of the value of sacrifices and hard-work, have always been central to the outlook of the Yousuf family. My business career began in the UK textiles industry, having moved to the country from Zambia at the age of 18. Experience managing factories and studying business provided a platform to develop my entrepreneurial skills. In Zambia, I subsequently set up an import-export business, my first venture into global industry, bringing second-hand clothes from the UK to the Zambian market.
But the goal has always been to strive for something bigger and better. This ambition and drive has propelled the growth of businesses owned by the Yousuf family. As the MBI Group continues to expand with a particular focus on the mining sector, we look forward to the new challenges that are on the horizon.
It is our view that the future of business in Zambia, and across sub-Saharan Africa, is bright, considering the impressive abundance of natural resources, the plentiful pool of skilled workers and the enormous market potential the region offers to investors. MBI Group is ideally positioned to harness these opportunities with energetic commitment, while upholding the core values which sets MBI Group apart from our competitors.

As we strive for even greater heights, I am truly proud of our journey from the backyard of our family home in Lusaka to the global business that we are today, operating in markets throughout sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.
